Curriculum

Analyzing the accounting statements of a municipality, school districts, colleges and universities, religious or civic organizations can be a challenge. The accounting system is designed for recording resources whose use has been limited. The focus is on accountability rather than profit.

The preparation and presentation of accounting statement components is different from traditional financial statements. Understanding the preparation and presentation of statements prepared using not-for-profit or fund accounting is critical as lenders are often asked to lend money to non-profits. Since significant funds are often restricted by the person or entity providing the funds, it is critical to understand the operating cash flow and assets available to service debt.

At the end of this webinar, participants should be able to:

  • Define not-for-profit or fund accounting
  • Identify entities using not-for-profit accounting
  • Explain why non-profits and government entities use not-for-profit accounting
  • Understand the accounting principles underlying the preparation and presentation of not-for-profit accounting statements
  • Interpret and analyze not-for-profit accounting statements
  • Identify potential issues outlined in the accounting statements
  • Apply the concepts in a case study
